Courtney Schutt

Courtney transferred to Calvin her sophomore year. Since she arrived she has been invested in the community—serving in a variety of ministries at the college, in the community and even in other states. Courtney is a strong leader with a passion for Jesus Christ and she is committed to God's call on her life for active ministry. “…Simple questions compel me to do research and match words with my thoughts. More than aiding my spiritual growth, I have the chance to create relationships with people who need the love and support God has blessed me with; I am able to be a listening ear or a helping hand.”

As a Worship Apprentice during 2004-05, Courtney eagerly used her musical gifts to lead and encourage others to discover and use their own God-given talents. This program provided her with important training in theology and worship. It also gave her significant leadership experiences, developing her teamwork and listening skills.

Courtney is also participating in the Jubilee Fellows Program (2005). She sees this opportunity as one that will influence her choices after college by providing her with a broader understanding of the history and structure of the Christian church as well as helping her to be a stronger member of her community and a greater servant on God's path. Courtney hopes that the summer internship component of the program will help her discern her calling.

Both of these grant programs have shaped Courtney’s understanding of vocation and her current plans for the future.

“Lilly programs have helped me understand that my purpose in college is to train for my vocation. I may learn skills that help my career, but I am also learning how to interact with people and how to give my thoughts and beliefs form. The immersed experiences Lilly programs offer allow me to practice as I learn. I can make mistakes, but have them corrected while learning why.”

“Both of these experiences in Christian leadership have shown me my gifts as a leader. My participation in the Worship Apprentice program has focused my direction on worship, and the Jubilee Fellowship will give me the chance to work with a congregation and hopefully give me further direction as I listen for God’s calling. [Based on] the experience I have had and the information I have learned, I plan to work for a year or two in a church or a para-church organization. Then I would like to return to graduate school or seminary when I know what higher degree would be beneficial to my vocation.”
