Safia Mohamoud

I traveled an untraditional path to seminary. Raised in a non-Christian home, I knew very little of this particular faith. However, I believed in the existence of God and knew that somehow, there was a connection between this larger-than-life being and we humans. My identity -- as one who claims Japan and Somalia in my heritage -- lends itself to the belief that this distinct background prepared me in a sense of openness and receptivity to people of diverse ideas, faiths, and theologies. Entering Howard not only brought about a new sense scholastically, but it marked a time when I came into an intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ.

As my spiritual life steadily grew through Howard's student campus ministries, I pursued my passion in international affairs and global issues by working in the Bunche International Affairs Center, studying abroad in Spain, interning for the US Department of State, and participating in the Japan Exchange Teaching Program. These experiences proved that my spiritual life and inner passions did not have to be separate, but could be fused. I accepted this idea, even if it defied conventional and traditional paths of 'ministry.'

The personal spiritual growth I accomplished while at Howard was tremendous. Organizations such as Ambassadors for Christ, the Chapel worship services, the SEDL, along with key professor and faculty mentors, greatly influenced and impacted by decision to pursue a seminary education. The above-mentioned people were mindful -- and the experiences were thoughtfully crafted -- to help nurture my calling and provide me with a balanced environment where I could carefully detect my call in service to God.
